Chimney Fire Warning Signs Every Columbia Homeowner Should Know

The culprit is almost always creosote: the flammable, tar-like residue that forms when wood smoke cools and condenses on the inside of your flue. The more you burn — especially if you burn unseasoned wood or run slow, smoldering fires — the faster it accumulates.

Creosote builds in degrees. First-degree creosote is a light, flaky soot that brushes away easily. Second-degree is a harder, more granular buildup. Third-degree creosote is a thick, shiny glaze that is both the most flammable and the most difficult to remove. Once you reach that stage, a single hot fire can be enough to ignite it.

Look for puffy or honeycombed creosote, cracked or warped flue tiles, a distorted or discolored damper, and cracks in the exterior masonry. Roofing material near the chimney that looks scorched, or creosote flakes on the roof or in the yard, are also red flags.

During a fire itself you might hear a loud cracking or popping, a deep rumbling like a freight train, or see dense smoke and sparks coming from the top of the chimney. If that ever happens, get everyone out and call the fire department — then have the chimney professionally inspected before you ever use it again.
